Haere Mai, Welcome to Koputaroa School

Koputaroa School (est. 1891) is a beautiful rural school located approximately 7 km north of Levin (New Zealand) between SH 1 and SH 57. We are a full primary, decile 6 school with a roll that fluctuates between 160 – 180.

Koputaroa is the name of the local settlement and in Maori it means Breast of the Albatross. This name refers to the heavy fog that fills the valley, and from the hill near the Marae, looks like the breast of an albatross. Koputaroa was originally called Kereru and the school’s emblem is of a Kereru.

For a rural school we have a large dedicated and committed staff: We have employed a new Principal this year.  We have 7 teachers (including one DP), a full time and a part time Office Manager, two Teacher Aides, two release teachers, a support teacher, part-time caretaker, cleaner and two bus drivers.

At our school we place a huge emphasis on quality learning and teaching and firmly believe in the principles of formative practice – children being actively involved in the learning and teaching process. Our dedicated staff are very committed to providing our children with the best possible learning experiences and children enjoy a collaborative, supportive, engaging and motivational learning environment.

We have this year utilised our Learning Centre as our first Modern Learning Environment (MLE).  This space caters for our students in Year 3-5.  We have 3 teachers and once teacher aide working in this space, as well as utilising the vacated classrooms as ‘breakout’ spaces.  We have introduced the concept of Learner Agency in our school and our students are developing a good understanding of what it takes to become ‘Self-Agentic’ learners. Our Years 6-8 Students work in our other MLE working with two full-time and one part time teacher.

We take an enormous amount of pride in our school, buildings and grounds. Our children have access to an expansive play area, numerous resources and 21st Century technologies. Children at our school also enjoy participating in a wealth of sports, such as; hockey, netball, rugby, soccer, water polo, mini-ball and cycling. Agriculture Day is a highlight on our school calendar, where the children are able to showcase indoor exhibits, art and craft and their pets.

Increasingly our school is effectively integrating the use of IT and Web 2.0 tools to enhance and support learning. We believe children are creators of their own learning and the use of Web 2.0 tools can actively develop this.

Koputaroa enjoys a very welcoming and supportive community and an active KPTA (Koputaroa Parent Teacher Association). The KPTA are the main fundraising body of our school, assisting with resourcing and funds. Their motto is: “Supporting our families and school to provide our children with as many opportunities as possible”

We look forward to  being a part of your child’s learning adventure at our school.

I am the TIC of softball at Ohau School and I had the pleasure of welcoming some of your students into our teams at the first game yesterday. I just wanted to tell you that your kids were terrific. Our coach tells me that Fletcher, in particular, was player of the day in the year 5/6 game. I watched the year 3/4 game and Ryder and Abigail not only played really well but they were brave and confident in joining a team that they didn’t know. We really look forward to seeing your players again in the coming weeks.
